What’s the deal?
We start at Esters in Stoke Newington, North London; A neighborhood coffee shop doing ‘unconventional’ breakfast, brunch & lunch and apparently the best cookie you’ll ever eat.
Said cookie is not your usual milk choc chip but a white chocolate and miso flavour so you know this isn’t going to be any ordinary cookie. (Miso is made from fermented soybeans widely used in Japanese cooking if you didn’t know and no, it doesn’t sound like the ideal ingredient for dessert!) ! The cookies got all the usual qualities you’d expect from a decent biscuit with a crunchy outside, soft chewy inside & enough chips or chunks for you to get the flavour of the biscuit itself without overwhelming the whole thing (yes, I eat a lot of biscuits) … but it’s once you taste the one at Esters that you realise that this is not your average cookie.
How was it?
The sickly sweetness of the white chocolate with the saltiness of the miso is a combination like no other. One minute your thinking this is way too sweet, the next minute your thinking wait, it’s savory. The next minute you think I can’t eat another bite while 2 minutes later it feels strangely addictive. I felt weirdly confused, satisfied, sick and addicted all in one.
So, is it really London’s best cookie?
Honestly? No, BUT it certainly is the most interesting cookie in London and I would recommend you pay them a visit to see for yourself! I’ll certainly be back to Esters to try the brunch that I’ve heard is very good, so I’ll keep you updated on that. Will I get the cookie again? I’m honestly still thinking about it so I suppose that’s a good sign and I’ll be sure to make the person I’m with buy one to experience it!
