The London Food Social is a great opportunity to try somewhere in London you may not venture to of a regular weekend.

Chiswick, which is west of the city, is a lovely leafy part of London that doesn’t feel like London at all. It’s a busy place mostly full of families, dog owners and now me. While some of us will travel right across the city to get to some cool new bar in East London (myself included), for some reason people don’t tend to go out of their way to visit here, and are surprised to learn it’s only in zone 2 (Yes, Londoners ZONE 2).

Of a weekend, you will find Chiswick High Road packed with people having a long, lazy (and probably hangover endured) brunch at one of its many places to choose from; and this month, the meet up was at West London’s No197 Chiswick Fire Station.

No197 Chiswick Fire StationNo197 Chiswick Fire StationNo197 Chiswick Fire StationNo197 Chiswick Fire Station As the name suggests this was once an old fire station, and the interior is bright, light, sleek and very modern. Imagine something out of one of those lifestyle magazines that we wish our imaginary home would look like one day.

The outside patio being just as photogenic.

No197 Chiswick Fire Station No197 Chiswick Fire StationTheir open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a weekend brunch being served until 5 pm … and don’t worry the food is coming soon.

So, what you think so far? So far so good, right?

Well, with this particular post, it’s quite important you read ’til the end to get the full picture.

But first coffee for some and cocktails for others…

No197 Chiswick Fire StationNo197 Chiswick Fire StationThere are eggs with salmon or ham. With lots of creamy hollandaise.

No197 Chiswick Fire Station No197 Chiswick Fire StationFried eggs with cheesy toast, bacon, and mushrooms.

No197 Chiswick Fire StationAvocado lovers can get a smokey aubergine, feta and lime dish.

Equally mushroom lovers can get a load mixed with cheese, truffle and creme fraiche on toast. (Thanks to Ken for the great photo!) Really creamy and rich.

No197 Chiswick Fire StationOn to sweet – granola with vanilla figs, mango, poached rhubarb and passion fruit. A bit small.

No197 Chiswick Fire Station…and lastly coconut, banana brulee pancakes. A bit disappointing.

No197 Chiswick Fire StationFinishing off with some very moreish salted caramel popcorn from Danielle founder of Brittle and Bark. (More of her treats from the first ever social here  which you can buy here)

No197 Chiswick Fire StationEverything that goes up on are places to recommend. Not so much a review but a friend telling you where to eat and what to order. If it doesn’t make the cut it simply doesn’t go up. The great thing about running a social like this is the feedback. The honest feedback that comes from all different perspectives. No biased opinions, just regular people wanting to meet new people and enjoy good food, which is why I wanted to share it with you.

So, what was the verdict from Chiswick Fire Station? A real mix actually.

With the inside being pretty beautiful, expectations were high. Some dishes were good (Eggs Benedict and the mushroom, avocado and cheesy egg toasts – albeit the sourdough bread quite tough) Everything else just okay (the granola and pancakes) Also, when things arrived we immediately thought portions were a bit small, but saying that, we all left saying we were surprised how it did fill us up.

Maybe it’s that so many places are doing amazing brunch now we’ve become a bit spoilt? Like we said, some things are great, some things are okay, but absolutely not terrible.

Thanks to Ken, Chris, Laura, Danielle, Angelina, Adeola and Natalie for coming and their ever valued opinions! Looking forward to the next one and keep an eye on this page for the next date.

I’ve been here and I totally get what you’re saying about feeling a bit underwhelmed at the size of the portions HOWEVER, myself and my fella think it’s because the plates they dish up on are insanely large, I actually think if they had different, more size appropriate plates neither your group, nor me and my fella would’ve felt this way. I’ve been back of an evening for cocktails with a friend and the ambiance was brilliant and the cocktails themselves were really good – if I was to go again, it’d definitely be for the latter rather than brunch, although maybe I should give it a second chance – can’t decide!! 🙂

      Hello Rebecca!

Good thinking on the plate sizes, i can see what you mean! haha.

I havn’t been for dinner either so thats next on my list. My friend has a passion fruit cocktail which looked delish, and I can imagine on a warm summer evening or cold winter night it’s a very cosy place to be!

I live local so maybe see you around the area one time, or sign up to the next one I’d love to meet you! xx

That’s such a shame about the pancakes because they look so tasty! The cocktail looks pretty yummy too.

Yeh very photogenic pancakes but a bit flat and small. I’m hoping it was an off day, and yes that cocktail looked lovely. I need one next time and not be boring with my mint tea haha. xx
