Come hungry, leave happy.
The only two things you need know for today’s post.
Where we at? Greek Kitchen aptly named The Hungry Donkey.
In a nutshell, we’re talking authentic Grecian food, done well and LOTS of it.
The place sits just behind the craziness that is the ‘city’ area of London, known mostly for its bankers, (yes, B-ankers) briefcases and high rise, swanky restaurants.
Here things are a lot more casual with sharing mezes, bigger mains and no need for briefcases.
Food wise, the menu definitely isn’t short on loads of Greek inspiration for the meat eater, vegetarian or health freak in us all. Not to mention there are some very generous portions are to be had!
You can either go for a whole load of mezes…
The best way to try a few things and get stuck in.
Like dips and flatbreads.
Traditional spanakopita (Spinach and feta pie)
Gigantes (Big beans)
Spicy sausage (Boar, pork and leek)
Feta bougiourdi (Pan fried cheese with tomato)
Or if you prefer there are larger plates to be had like these…
Beef stifado, souvlaki wraps and stuffed vegetables.
The Greeks have seriously got eyes for desserts too with a few custard/filo combos to choose from (we love it already) and THE most unusual tasting buffalo milk ice cream. Definitely one to try.
Having a Greek best friend, I’ve fallen in love with their approach to food. The way that it’s almost an event, spending hours sharing, talking and enjoying. While The Hungry Donkey is not to that degree (we are still in crazy London remember) that’s the vibe they’re trying to bring to the capital.
The mains are good but the mezes are really the star of the show, and while there is plenty of cheese and pastry on the menu (oh yes!) if you’re trying to eat a bit healthier or not a meat eater it really wouldn’t be much of a challenge. No boring salads in sight.
With a lot of melitzanosalata, tiropita and papoutsakia on the menu, you may need a few language lessons before you go. Or maybe a stiff drink. Haha.
